If your dog is acting strangely, but you still do not have the certainty that you are sick of something in particular and you do not know whether to take it to the veterinarian, it is important that you take its temperature , as the presence of fever can indicate that something is not it's good

The normal temperature of a dog is a little higher than that of humans, because it is usually between 38 and 39 degrees Celsius, when ours is between 36 and 37 degrees Celsius approximately.

In the case of dogs, they are considered to have a fever (or have pyrexia, the correct medical term) when their temperature exceeds 39.5 degrees Celsius, usually because of an infection or inflammation (although there may be other reasons, such as various diseases, tumors, heat stroke or reaction to vaccines , for example).

Some of the signs that can tell you that your dog has a fever are:

  • Your dog is sleepy.
  • He seems depressed.
  • It continually shudders.
  • No appetite.
  • Weakness.
  • Elevated heart rate
  • Breathe quickly.
  • Threw up.
  • Cough.
  • Dehydration
  • Nasal discharge

Take into account that these symptoms can occur alone or together.

There are many myths about how you can take the temperature of dogs if you do not have a thermometer. For example, there are those who claim that a cold wet dog nose is a sign that the temperature is normal, while a hot, dry nose means your dog has a fever. Or someone says that by touching the ears of dogs you can know if they have a fever or not.

The certain thing is that the only way to know the temperature of your dog with certainty is taking it with a thermometer of anal form , as the veterinarian does when you take it to consultation.

Keep in mind that sometimes the fever is not as bad as it seems , it is the normal process that the body has to fight any external agent that is invading and causing a disease and often effectively helps to eliminate it.

However, an extremely high fever , which remains for many hours or that occurs continuously on consecutive days or more than 4 times in less than 2 weeks, is definitely something abnormal that should be checked by a veterinarian.

What to do if my dog has a fever?

  • If your dog is between 39 and 40.5 degrees Celsius, you can help the fever go down by wetting your hair and legs a bit.
  • You can also fan it a bit since it is wet (preferably with a manual fan so that it is not so rough the experience for him), because that way it will cool faster.
  • If you detect that your dog's temperature has reached 41 degrees Celsius , take into account that you are facing a veterinary emergency and you should take it to the doctor as soon as possible, because a fever of this magnitude can have serious consequences and can even cause death.
  • Never give your dog medicine for humans that serve to lower fever, because you can intoxicate or cause death.

As always, if you have any doubt about your dog's health or if your instinct tells you that something is not right, it is better to go to the vet to check your dog and help him to feel better.
